Living A
God-Glorifying Life Through Good Health.
(Featured on CNN)
When I was growing up in the '50s and '60s, there was no obesity epidemic, and children were not
developing old-age maladies such as heart disease. Cancer, Alzheimer's, and autism were virtually
unheard of. Living a healthy lifestyle was a lot easier.

(1) according to a new study, almost 70 percent of United States adults over the age of 60 are overweight or obese?
(2) a laboratory study shows that when fructose is present when a child's fat cells mature, more of these cells mature into belly fat, and less able to respond to insulin?
(3) the United States, Colombia, Ireland, Israel, Malaysia, New Zealand, and Singapore are the only nations that fluoridates over 50 percent of their water supply?
(4) the three must-have ingredients for prostate health are: bee pollen, the mineral boron, and 5-Loxin?
(5) more and more girls are reaching puberty before the age of 10? (A 2007 study found that many girls reached puberty by the age of 8.)
(6) people who are depressed are two times as likely to develop certain forms of dementia such as Alzheimer's disease?
(7) According to CNN, 27 percent of Americans are obese? (This statistic was brought to life when CNN broadcast that cancer rates are rising among the obese. This broadcast was aired August 6, 2010.
I posted this medical alert because alternative medical websites, blogs, and journals have long publicized the obesity/cancer connection. It now seems that mainstream news sources are now compelled to air this alarming trend.
CNN also stated that as obesity rates skyrocket, so does the rate of cancer.)
(8) hot peppers raise your core body temperature causing it to burn more calories? (This is the result of a study published in the International Journal of Obesity. The hotter the pepper, the greater the calorie burn.
In terms of 'hotness,' here's how peppers rank:
(9) CNN reported on a test which reveals if you will develop Alzheimer's disease? (The test is a spinal tap to detect the presence of certain proteins in the fluid.)
(10) Ben & Jerry's All Natural ice cream is anything but 'natural'? (According to CSPI [Center for Science in the Public Interest], Ben & Jerry's premium ice cream uses artificial and chemically-altered ingredients in its product.
CSPI says that at least 90 percent of the flavors of Ben & Jerry's 'natural' ice cream are not actually natural.
It cites as a few examples corn syrup, alkalized cocoa, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, vanillin, maltodextrin and dextrose. A few of these require some type of chemical processing while others are simply artificial.
Alkalized cocoa, for instance, involves a chemical process that changes cocoa's natural flavor, texture and chemical structure, as well as eliminates some of its acidity and healthy antioxidant content. And vanillin is just an artificial version of vanilla.
Executive director of CSPI Michael F. Jacobson says, "Ben & Jerry's sylvan labels notwithstanding, these ingredients come from the factory, not the farm. And slapping an 'all natural' label on the products certainly implies that the products are top quality and deserve to fetch a higher price. It's a stretch to call any of [these ingredients] 'natural'.
(11) over one-half billion eggs have been recalled by the FDA due to salmonella contamination (as of August 23, 2010)? (But what you may not know, and what the industry doesn't want you to know, is that commercial chicken is just as infected with salmonella. Why isn't the FDA recalling the chicken you purchase at your local supermarket, and the chicken products you buy at fast food restaurants?
Poultry is a huge industry. It is huge and powerful. If the FDA were inclined to institute a recall of chicken, the filthy and brutal practices of the poultry industry would come to light. The salmonella chicken poisoning results from filth and uncleanliness, just as it does for eggs.
Chickens as well as other meats which Americans eat tons of are factory farmed. This inhumane practice naturally breeds harmful bacteria.
Salmonella is killed by heat. That's why people don't get this type of poisoning from eating chicken--it is all cooked. In order to avoid salmonella poisoning don't eat raw eggs. Cook them at least until the whites and yolks are firm.
Right now shelled eggs are not pasteurized. But be aware that pasteurization will not only kill bacteria like salmonella, but destroy much of egg's healthy nutrients.
We would have nothing to fear if factory farming were to be abolished. Harmful practices such as pasteurization would not be necessary.
It is unfortunate that the federal agency created to protect the American people (FDA) from harmful food and drugs seems hell-bent on instituting food practices which cause harm in the long run. Milk is pasteurized to protect against harmful bacteria which is created by factory farms. Almonds are irradiated to again supposedly protect the public from harmful bacteria.
I suspect that the FDA would like to eventually pasteurize or irradiate raw eggs.)
(12) farms that produce and sell healthy raw milk are being targeted and persecuted by federal authorities?
(13) the alcohol poison methanol is in nearly all fruit and vegetables? (In this form it is practically harmless because it is bound to pectin. But once the fruit and vegetables are placed in glass or aluminum containers the methanol separates from the pectin. The methanol can then build up to very high levels and contribute to diseases like multiple sclerosis.)
(14) a protein-type individual requires more salt than a carbohydrate-type?
(15) continuing research is pointing towards vitamin K being the next vitamin D?
(Some authorities say that vitamin K is most likely where vitamin D was 10 years ago in terms of known benefits. And according to Dr. Cees Vermeer, one of the world's leading researchers of vitamin K, nearly everyone is deficient in it.
Vitamin K is necessary for blood clotting. Dr. Vermeer says that most people get enough of this vitamin in their diet for this purpose. However, to offer protection against: (1) arterial calcification, cardiovascular disease, varicose veins (2) osteoporosis (3) prostate cancer, lung cancer, liver cancer, leukemia and (4) brain health problems, including dementia, people are not getting enough.
Vitamin K comes in two forms: K1
and K2. Vitamin K1 comes from plants such as spinach, kale, and broccoli and vitamin K2 is bacterially produced. The gut contains a lot of K2
but it is not absorbed there, and passes unused through your stool.
Vitamin K2 is in fermented foods -- particularly natto which is the richest source. It goes straight to vessel walls, bones, and tissues other than your liver.
There are different forms of vitamin K2. MK8 and MK9 come mainly from dairy products. The most important forms are MK4 and MK7 though.
MK4 is a synthetic product, very similar to vitamin K1, and your body is capable of converting K1 into MK4. However, MK4 has a very short half-life of about one hour, making it a poor candidate as a dietary supplement. After reaching your intestines, it remains mostly in your liver, where it is useful in synthesizing blood-clotting factors.
MK7 is a newer agent with more practical applications because it stays in your body longer; its half-life is three days, meaning you have a much better chance of building up a consistent blood level, compared to MK4 or K1. MK7 is extracted from the fermented soy product natto. You could actually get loads of MK7 from consuming natto as it is relatively inexpensive, and is available in most Asian food markets. Few people, however, tolerate its smell and slimy texture.
A German research group discovered in a study that took place in 2008 that vitamin K2 provides great protection againt prostate cancer. Dr. Vermeer says that men taking the highest amounts of K2 develop 50 percent less prostate cancer.
A Rotterdam study in 2004 showed that people who take 45 mcg of K2 daily live seven years longer than those who take 12 mcg a day.
The Prospect Study which followed 16,000 people for 10 years showed that for each additional 10 mcg of K2 in the diet, 9 percent fewer cardiac events followed.
Evidence suggests that K2 is essential for bone health. It protects against osteoporosis.
This is what is known about K2's bone protection from studies thus far:
Your body can convert vitamin K1 into vitamin K2. However, studies show that the amount made from this process is insufficient to make a difference. Even though you may being getting enough K1 from your diet, most of it is used by the body for clotting factors. There is too little left for your bones.
The recent European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study, published in the October 2009 issue of the New England Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that a high dietary intake of K2 leads to a reduced cancer risk. Vitamin K2 leads to a 30 percent lower risk of dying from cancer too.
If can tolerate natto, many Westerners cannot, you can get all the K2 you need by eating 15 grams daily (1/2 ounce.) An option is to take a vitamin K2 supplement. K2 is fat soluble so that if you take a supplement, use fat along with it. Extra-virgin olive oil is a good choice.
As to dosage, Dr. Vermeer recommends geting between 45 mcg and 185 mcg daily for adults. Exercise caution on taking higher dosages if
you are on anticoagulants.

(16) chickens raised in unsanitary conditions are far more likely to be contaminated, and to lay contaminated eggs? (The British government did a study on the level of salmonella contamination based on the living conditions of chickens. The results of the study found that:
Factory farming is notorious for the unsanitary and inhumane conditions experienced by not only chickens, but pigs and cattle too. Unfortunately, the majority of commercially purchased poultry and red meat comes from factory farms.
The British study showed that the highest rates of contamination occurred in farms with the most chickens. Factory farms cram chickens in cages or pens with no more room than that taken up by letter-sized sheet of paper. These farms typically cage and process 30,000 to millions of chickens.
While the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and health authorities scratch their heads over America's continuing food recalls, a simple solution exists. This solution though is one which the poultry, dairy, and meat industries will fight against tooth and nail.
The solution? Get rid of factory farms. Raise poultry and beef the way farmers did 100 years ago.
Of course this will never happen. The FDA will allow a flawed system to remain in existence, and merely apply a band-aid to the problem. That band-aid might be the recommendation of egg pasteurization or irradiation.
But you don't have to sit still for contaminated food from sick animals. Buy organic eggs from local farms who raise free-ranged hens.)
(17)
the United States
is the second largest egg producer in the world?
(18) Tyson Foods was ordered by a federal judge to withdraw its "raised without antibiotics" ads when it was found out they were injecting eggs with antibiotics and using antibiotics in chicken feed?
(19) people who are insulin resistant and have type 2 diabetes have a 65 percent greater risk of developing Alzheimer's disease?
(20) an employee has sued McDonald's for making him fat, and won? (A one time franchise manager in Brazil successfully sued McDonald's for causing him to gain 29 kilograms (approximately 64 pounds.)
A Brazilian court has ordered McDonald's to pay the 32-year old $18,000. His weight was gained over a period of 12 years.
As a part of his responsibility to McDonald's, the unnamed manager had to sample food products every day to ensure that they met the company's quality standards. McDonald's hired 'mystery clients' to randomly visit restaurants, report on food, service, and cleaniless. The suit also stated that McDonald's offered their employees free lunches.)
(21) alpha-lipoic acid improves creatine uptake by muscle tissue?
(22) you can reduce your risk of catching a cold by 50 percent by exercising? (A study of 1,000 volunteers found that even if regular exercisers did catch a cold, the symptoms were less severe. Exercise helps to boost your immune system.)
(23) one research study showed that athletes who trained with a weight that allowed only six reps had their metabolisms elevated higher and longer than athletes who worked in the twelve-rep range? (This means that more calories are burned when heavier weights are lifted. Another study showed that athletes who rested just 30 seconds between sets burned 50 percent more calories than those who rested three minutes. The take home lesson from these two studies is to train heavy and keep rest periods from 30 to 60 seconds.)
(24) according to the latest research, there are three ingredients that a prostate formula must have in order to be effective? (The first of these ingredients is bee pollen. Studies show that bee pollen lowers levels of DHT.
DHT is a hormone that increases in quantity as one gets older. Low levels are necessary for a healthy-sized prostate.
Bee pollen also helps to relax the smooth muscles lining the urinary tract. Using it in their research, Japanese scientists recorded the following results:
The mineral boron is the second nutrient needed for prostate health. It helps keep your prostate in its natural walnut-sized shape.
Boron along with other nutrients used to be plentiful in the soil. However commercial farming has depleted the soil of this and other necessary nutrients. The third and last nutrient is known as 5-Loxin. 5-Loxin is a special extract of the boswellia serrata plant. It supports your prostate on a cellular level.)
(25) despite what your physical activity level is, sitting for long periods of time raises your risk of death? (Breaking research from the American Cancer society found that women who sat for 6 hours a day or more were 37 percent more likely to die than those who sat under 3 hours a day. The risk was 18 percent higher for men. The study lasted for 14 years.)
(26) the sweet potato has more fiber than a bowl of oatmeal, more vitamin A than a cup of carrots, and more potassium than a banana? (The sweet potato is also rich in vitamin C, and loaded with carotenoids -- antioxidants that protect against cancer and heart disease; they increase your immune function too. Calorie-wise, the sweet potato comes in at 150 calories.
Oprah Winfrey's former personal chef, Art Smith, has come up with a nutritious sweet potato salad recipe. It serves 8, and per serving has the following nutrients: 114 calories, 2 grams protein, 14 grams carbohydrates, 2 grams fiber, 7 grams fat, 2 milligrams cholesterol, and 341 grams sodium.
Recipe
4 small sweet potatoes
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1 tablespoon mustard
4 celery stalks, sliced 1/4-inch thick
1 small red bell pepper cut into 1/4-inch dice
1 cup diced fresh pineapple
2 scallions, finely chopped
salt and pepper
1/2 cup coarsely chopped toasted pecans
chopped fresh chives
1 Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Wrap each sweet potato in foil and bake for 1 hour. Unwrap; let cool.Peel; cut into 3/4-inch chunks.
2 Mix mayonnaise and mustard in a large bowl. Add sweet potatoes, celery, red pepper, pineapple, and scallions; toss gently. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Cover and refrigerate for about an hour.
3 Fold in pecans and sprinkle with chives.

(27) on average, Hispanics in the United States live over 2 years longer than whites and more than 7 years longer than blacks?
(28) it takes about 20 years for pancreatic cancer to develop? (According to a new report in the journal Nature, the onset, growth, and spread of pancreatic cancer is by and large determined by the types of food eaten, and whether they feed or starve cancer cells.
It takes almost 12 years for the first pancreatic cancer cells to develop, and nearly another 7 years to grow. Then it takes one year for the cancer to spread. The cancer begins to kill in the last second to third year. This information was deduced from an analysis of data by Christine lacobuzio-Donahue, MD, Ph.D, associate professor of pathology and oncology at Hopkins' Sol Goldman Pancreatic Cancer Research Center.
A 2009 study published in Cancer Causes and Control suggests that eating conventionally-raised red meat (factory-farmed meat) increases pancreatic cancer risk. Also, table sugar and potatoes are associated with a 100 percent increased risk.)
(29) the pecan is the only tree nut native to America? (Pecans are a high quality protein source with very few carbs.)
(30) succotash, a mix of corn and lima beans, is not American? (This was one of my favorite dishes when I was a child. I just recently found out the truth about this delicious combination.
Contrary to what is being circulated about, native Americans (the Indians) did not make succotash by combining corn with lima beans. This is because of the simple reason that lima beans are not native to America. Nutritionists who like to push grains use this Indian story to further their agenda of more grain for more Americans.
While Native Americans ate corn, their primary food was meat. They were hunters and not farmers. A study of their skeletons suggests that they had strong frames, teeth and jaws. Their food was mainly protein-based from the abundant wild game they hunted and killed.
True succotash is made with meat and haricot (navy) beans. The Wampanoag Indians who lived near Plymouth, Massachusetts taught the early European settlers how to make succotash using dried meat, fresh game birds and native tubers. In addition, pecans, squash, and pumpkins might be added.
Over the decades, the native American was forced to replace their protein with huge quantities of grain. An examination of their skeletons shows a remarkable decline in vitality.
Our national food pyramid chart has emphasized grain over the years, and very little red meat. Overall this campaign has been very successful. More and more people are limiting red meat consumption, or avoiding it altogether.
The truth of the matter is that the only red meat that should be avoided is conventional red meat -- the factory-farmed variety. Organic, grass-fed red meat is very good and healthy for you.
Because we are getting so little quality protein in our diets, it is necessary to supplement with a protein drink. Most protein powders sold in local stores comes from grain-fed and antibiotic and hormone-laced cattle. Your health demands protein sourced from cows with access to the outdoors and pastured grazing land. This is especially true if your metabolic type is protein.
Mercola's Miracle Whey protein powder is free of artificial anything, hormone-free, antibiotic-free, pesticide-free, totally organic and sourced from grass-fed cows. Read about it here.
(31) food manufacturers use other sodium-based ingredients in their products that don't have 'sodium' in their name? (If you are watching your sodium [salt] intake, you need to be on the lookout for other sodium-based ingredients whose sodium content is not factored in. Watch for metabisulfate, erythorate, propionate, and guanylat too.)
(32) the most inexpensive weight loss supplement is water? (Anecdotal evidence that water will accelerate weight loss is backed up by several weight loss studies. In one study, participants who drank an 8-ounce glass of water before a meal lost an average of 15.5 pounds versus 11 pounds by those who did not drink water.)
(33) you can beat diabetes by doing the opposite of what the Amercian Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends? (Contray to the ADA's recommendation, a diabetic's diet should contain a source of protein with every meal, and some healthy fat. Your typical low-fat diet is jam-packed with starches such as pastas, breads, and cereals. Even whole grains are broken down into insulin-releasing carbohydrates. That's because they raise your blood sugar levels.
You need to make protein the main course of every meal. Base your diet on grass-fed beef, buffalo, wild game and eggs. For variety, add an occasional wild-caught, cold-water fish.
Conventional factory-farmed meat is fed grain instead of grass. Grain is full of heart harming omega-6 fatty acids. These animals are also confined and cannot exercise. The fat that they contain is unhealthy and harmful to your well-being.
The South Beach and Atkins diets are on the mark in advocating fewer carbs. But the protein source has to be wild, cold water fish (not farmed) and grass-fed beef. This beef has healthy conjugated linoleic acid and saturated fat.
Not only will a combination of good protein, fat, and low carbs control your blood sugar, but they will help lose fat and gain lean body mass too.)
(34) one of oldest men in America is 109 years old? (Bernardo LaPallo was born in 1901; he gives credit to his father for the following advice: "health should be your first priority, and in order to do that, you eat properly, and...keep your colon clean, above all."
Bernardo eats a diet of raw food. And he has been eating raw for over 104 years!
According to Bernardo, a healthy colon just doesn't happen by accident. "You have to eat properly -- not a bunch of stirred up, boiled-to-death food," he says.)
(35) if you eat nuts at least twice a week, you are 31 percent less likely to gain weight than someone who never or rarely eats them? (This is based on a study conducted in Spain; participants numbered 8,865 adult men and women and lasted 28 months.
The cashew is an interesting nut; cashews are kidney-shaped seeds which cling to the bottom of the cashew apple, the fruit of the cashew tree. This tree is native to the coastal areas of northeastern Brazil.
Unlike some other nuts, cashews are always sold shelled because the interior of the shells contains a caustic resin, known as cashew balm, which must be carefully removed before the nuts are fit to be eaten.
About 75 percent of the fat of cashews is unsaturated. Most of this unsaturated fat is oleic acid, the monounsaturated fat that is found in olive oil.
One-quarter cup of cashews supplies nearly 38 percent of the daily recommended value of copper. Copper is necessary for iron utilization, elemination of free radicals, development of bone and connective tissue, and the production of melanin. It is also an essential component of SOD.)
Cashews are a good source of zinc too. One ounce of dry roasted cashews contains 1.6 mg.
(36) omega-3 deficiency is the 6th leading killer of Americans?
(37) a study hows that women with the lowest bone mass measurement were over 2 times as likely to develop Alzheimer's disease?
(38) a seaweed extract can help fight fat? (Fucoxanthin, an extract from brown seaweed, has the ability to reduce body fat. Through some mechanism fucoxanthin makes white fat (adult fat) act more like brown fat.
Brown fat is found primarily in infants although adults have some too. Brown fat heats your body by burning other forms of fat.)
(39) the overwhelming majority of people on prescription drugs believe that their doctors are under the influence of pharmaceutical companies? (A Consumer Reports survey interviewed almost 1,200 patients about the pharmaceutical industry's influence over doctors. Over half of those interviewed believe that gifts from drug companies influence which drugs their doctors prescribe.
More than 80 percent believe that drug companies offer incentives to doctors to get them to write more prescriptions.)
(40) greater numbers of farmer's markets are operating throughout the winter months? (Increasing numbers of people are desirous of buying locally-grown produce year round. Currently there are almost 900 farmer's markets in the United States -- up by 17 percent from two years ago.)
(41) at least 25 percent of all United States children take prescription drugs on a regular basis? (This news came from Medco Health Solutions, Inc. Many of these drugs were intended for adult use; the prescription drugs being used by children have unknown effects during long-term use.
According to a report by the online edition of the Wall Street Journal, children are now taking sleeping pills, diabetes drugs and even statin drugs in addition to drugs for asthma and ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.) Typically these drugs are prescribed for adults only.
"We know we're making errors in dosing and safety...," said Dr. Danny Benjamin, a professor of pediatrics at Duke University.)
(42) consistent exercise is linked to a lower risk of dying from colon cancer? (The study which found this amazing correlation was performed by researchers from Siteman Cancer Center at Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.
The study's objective was to discover whether changes in physical activity had any influence on the incidence of colon cancer diagnosis or the risk of death from the disease. Data from over 150,000 men and women was used.
"People who were consistently active over the course of their adulthood had a lower risk of death from colon cancer than those who were sedentary.
People often wonder around the start of a new year whether exercise really will help them stay healthy or whether it's already too late. It's never too late
to start exercising, but it's also never too early to start being active. That's the message we hope people will take away from this study," says first author
Kathleen Y. Wolin, ScD.)

(43) a new study reveals that obesity might begin in babies as young as nine months old? (Researchers weren't surprised that obesity rates steadily trended upward for the past few years, but what did surprise them was that the trend began at such a young age.
Researchers found that 31.9 percent of babies 9 months of age and 34.3 percent at 2 years old were obese or at risk of becoming obese. Hispanic children, or those from low-income families were more likely to be obese than white children; Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders were at a lower risk. Female children were at a lower risk of becomg obese than male children.
"Being in an undesirable weight category at nine months subsequently predisposed children to remain in a less desirable weight category," said lead author Brian Moss.
"At younger ages, it is critical for parents to watch their child's nutritional intake as this will be the main determinant of their weight status," added
childhood obesity expert Joyce Lee, MD, an assistant professor in pediatric endocrinology and health services research at the University of Michigan
at Ann Arbor.)

(44) approximately 100 years ago Americans ate only 15 grams of fructose a day? (This was primarily in the form of fruit; today Americans are consuming over 135 grams of fructose a day mostly in the form of soda.
One standard can of soda per day can cause you to gain 15 pounds in the course of a year! This amount will also increase your risk of developing diabetes by a staggering 85 percent!
High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is processed by your body entirely different from other forms of sugar. (Manufacturers who use HFCS in their products will have you believe that it is no different than ordinary table sugar -- don't you believe it.)
Your liver does all the work when it metabolizes HFCS. This is unlike the way it processes other forms of sugar. HFCS is a hepatotoxin -- it can cause your liver to overwork itself.)
(45) the FDA has notified small pharmacies that they will no longer be able to manufacture or distribute injectable vitamin C? (Injectable vitamin C has been found to cure mononucleosis, hepatitis, and many influenza virusus, and well as certain forms of cancer. Liquid forms of this vitamin have been in use safely for deacdes.
By the way, no one should substitute home-made injectable vitamin C for pharmaceutical grade; it isn't safe.)
(46) researchers around the globe believe that the most beneficial diet protocol is high protein, low carb.
(47) approximately 70 percent of people who receive chemotherapy for throat cancer die within 5 years?
(48) reduced melatonin levels, due to prolonged exposure to light, is known to increase your risk of developing cancer?
(49) mercury levels in the umbilical cord are 1.7 times greater than in a mother's blood? (According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), women who eat fish 2 or more times a week have mercury levels in their bodies that are 7 times greater than women who had not eaten fish for a month.
The toll mercury can take on infants and unborn children are great. It can cause:
Environmental Health Perspectives contained a report which said that mercury exposure from fish consumption is positively associated with premature delivery.
I would advise women who plan on becoming pregnant, or who are pregnant, to avoid eating fish altogether.
But don't avoid getting omega-3 fatty acids. This nutrient, especially DHA, is essential for your child's development. Krill is an unsurpassed source for omega-3s.)
