Chlorella For Detoxification of Heavy Metals and Cancer Defense

What is chlorella?

Chlorella is a natural and very powerful detoxification agent. It is a single-cell fresh water green algae which contains more chlorophyll per gram than any other plant.

Chlorophyll has proved to be one of the greatest natural food substances for cleansing the liver and blood. Chlorella contains between 3% to 5% pure natural chlorophyll–the highest of any green algae.

Chlorella has a fibrous, indigestible outer shell (20%). The other 80% is composed of healthy nutrients.

The fat breakdown of chlorella is as follows: 60-70% unsaturated fats and 25-33% saturated fats. Its fatty acid breakdown is:

  • oleic acid 18-20%
  • linoleic acid (omega-6) 11-22%

  • alpha-linolenic (omega-3) 14-16%
  • What are its health benefits?

  • Chlorella is a powerful, all-natural detoxifying agent. The fibrous outer shell binds with heavy metals such as mercury, and pesticides, and removes them from the body. Mercury and PCBs are a major concern for fish-eaters. A steady diet of chlorella will shuttle these harmful chemicals out of the body through the stool.

The detoxification of heavy metals and other toxins will take anywhere from 3 to 6 months depending on the dosage. Because it is a food, it is virtually impossible to take too much. By eliminating toxins from the body, chlorella actually strengthens the immune system.

  • The chlorophyll in chlorella helps fight against anemia, and it also stimulates the production of red blood cells. Chlorophyll also assists in shuttling oxygen throughout the body and to the brain.

  • Chlorella has been observed to help defeat cancer. It causes the levels of interferon to increase. Interferon is one of the body’s greatest defense against cancer.
  • The body’s pH level should be between 7.0 (neutral) and 7.4 which is slightly alkaline. However, because of American’s love affair with refined and processed food, and steady consumption of soft drinks which have a pH of 2.7, we are way off the mark. These foods are many times more acidic than our body is.

There are certain telltale signs of acidity. People who are acidic have poor oxygen utilization. Physical manifestations are excessive sighing and breathlessness. Minor exertions leaves them out of breath (panting) and they may experience muscle pain or cramps. Insomnia and a constant 'lump in the throat' are also signs of being too acidic.

The components of the standard American diet (SAD), meat, drugs, soft drinks, breads, grains, alcohol, caffeinated drinks such as coffee, sugar, sweeteners, table salt, are converted by the body into acid residues. The excessive acid breaks down bone and muscle tissue. The bone loss leads to osteoporosis and the muscle loss leads to sarcopenia.

Almost all diseases, including cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, and diabetes begin and thrive in an acidic environment. It has been estimated that 1/3 of all Americans will contract cancer at some point in their lifetimes.

A healthy diet should consist roughly of 20% acidic and 80% alkaline foods. Note the following table:

strongly acid: meat, fish, eggs, hard cheese

mildly acid: grains, legumes, nuts, milk, yogurt, kefir

mildly alkaline (80%): fruits, vegetables, berries

Clorella is alkaline and it will help in restoring the body’s natural pH balance. (Read also...)

  • In cases of hypoglycemia, low blood sugar, chlorella has been shown to normalize it. Proper levels of blood sugar are necessary for brain and heart function and energy metabolism. Chlorella can also lower high blood pressure.
  • How much chlorella should I take?

It is generally recommended that a person take at least 3 grams of chlorella per day. I purchase the brand made by Vibrant Health (See image below). Each capsule contains about 450 mg which equates to 6 to 7 capsules. Each bottle contains 180 capsules. Although they can be taken all at once, I recommend 2 capsules, 3 times a day with meals.

Chlorella is high in fiber and the body must adapt transitioning from a low fiber, processed diet to a high fiber diet. This adaptive period will usually result in bloating and gas. You may have to slowly work up to 6 capsules a day. Go slow. See Rice Bran Extract

Alpha-lipoic acid is a powerful antioxidant found naturally in the body. It is both water and fat soluble. Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is also a chelator. It chelates (binds) to heavy metals such as mercury, iron and cadmium. (Read...)
